Locksmith questions, answered
Should I rekey or replace my locks after moving in?
Rekeying is usually enough if the locks are in good condition. It makes the old keys useless at a lower cost than new hardware. Replace locks that are worn, damaged, low quality, or when you want better security or a different style.
Can all my doors use one key?
Often, yes. Locks with compatible keyways can be rekeyed to work with a single key. If your locks are different brands with incompatible keyways, replacing one or two cylinders can make it possible.
What makes a deadbolt installation strong?
A solid door, a quality deadbolt, and a reinforced strike plate fastened with long screws into the wall framing behind the jamb. Longer screws in the hinges help too. Many break-ins succeed by splitting a weak frame, not by defeating the lock.
Are double-cylinder deadbolts a good idea?
They prevent someone from reaching through nearby glass to open the lock, but they can trap people inside during a fire if the key isn't handy. Some local codes restrict them. Discuss the safety trade-offs and local rules with a locksmith.
How can I avoid lockout scams?
Ask for a total price on the phone, the business's legal name and address, and confirmation that they'll try non-destructive entry first. Get the price in writing before work starts, and be wary of anyone who insists on drilling immediately.
Are smart locks secure?
Many smart locks are well built, but security depends on the lock's physical strength, how it's installed, the security of its app and how you manage codes. Keep firmware updated, use strong codes, and know how to get in if the batteries die.
What should I do if my key breaks in the lock?
Don't try to push the broken piece further in. A locksmith can usually extract it without replacing the lock. If you have another key, don't use it until the broken piece is out.
Why is my deadbolt hard to lock?
Often the door has shifted and the bolt is rubbing on the strike plate. Adjusting the strike or the door's hinges usually fixes it. A dry, sticky cylinder can also help with a lock lubricant made for the purpose.
How often should locks be replaced?
There's no fixed schedule. Replace locks when they're worn, damaged, loose, hard to operate after adjustment, or when you want better security. Rekey whenever you're unsure who has keys.
Will a locksmith ask for proof that I live here?
A professional locksmith should ask for some proof that you live at or have the right to enter the property before or after opening the door, such as ID and a document with the address. That protects you as well as them.
